Most schools take either your best test (all one sitting) or your best scores (best math, best critical reading, best writing from all your tests) so retaking the SAT usually will not hurt you.
You may want to look into the schools you are considering. Many schools do not currently weight the SAT Writing section very heavily in their admissions ...

I am just entering my senior year and I already have excellent scores, excepting the writing section on the SAT(650). I am wondering if it would be worth my while to study and retake(expecialy now that I have finished my AP composition course) and risk taking lower scores on my math and verbal(730 and 800, respectively), or just take it ...

One 25-minute Writing - Multiple Choice Section
One 10-minute Writing - ...

Some schools prefer one over the other [in SC they prefer the SAT, but in IL they prefer the ACT, for example], but most accept both. The SAT and the ACT test you on different things as well.. I'm not sure what the exact difference is, because I only took the SAT, but I think the SAT is aimed more towards reading/writing and critical thinking, and ...

It seems like checking with the schools is the consensus opinion, which is probably a good way to go about it. If you think you may be able to improve your scores a tremendous amount, it might be worth re-taking them to show you are a more disciplined student now. Just my two cents.
Good luck... I think it's great you are going back to school to ...

Understanding Latin roots can definitely help out. It may allow you to make some educated guesses when you're unsure of what a word means.
More importantly, I'd take practice tests. For me, it helped to do this so I was comfortable with the question types. I wanted to be focused on answering the question not understanding what I was supposed to ...
