Why do they make us wait so long for admissions decisions?

Why do they make us wait so long for admissions decisions?

Waiting three months to find out where you got in seems like an eternity. I now dread it when people ask me if I know where I'm going to college (mostly family friends or my parents' friends). I want to be like "Stop asking! I'll tell you when I know more."

I know, I know... colleges get thousands of applications, but waiting for a decisions really sucks.

    I feel your pain.

THe one nice thing I did was apply to a school with rolling admissions. I already know I got into Wisconsin-Madison... so I know I'm going to college somewhere, at the very least!

Tell me about it... I should have applied somewhere early just to have an acceptance letter already.

I agree with you.  I find myself the online status of my applications religiously.  I've noticed a handful of schools have started a sort of "express lane".  Basically, give them a larger application fee and you'll get a more timely response.

Because they have thousands of applications to process.

    It's probably a big decision.

Maybe it is to teach us patience.  It is hard for me because I like instant gratification.  Maybe someday we will submit applications online and a pop up box will tell us if we got in. :)

Pop-up box decisions... I like that idea!

Oh, I totally agree! Northwestern used to be my dream school, but after waiting soooo long for them I felt like they almost did it on purpose because they were SO elite and assumed that everybody would wait for them no matter what. It made it easier to turn them down in the end.

Re: Why do they make us wait so long for admissions decisions?

Eh Northwestern was a $65 fee and they held out till like April last year... If you did early decision you knew by December, but otherwise all acceptance letters were sent out around the same time, only like a month before the deadline.

Rolling admissions are so much nicer.

Being patience is a thing you will learn. In North Carolina a college accidently sent acceptance letters to students who got rejected.

I dont know about the long wait, but doing the early admissions thing can help ease the pain.

Re: Why do they make us wait so long for admissions decisions?

I know what you mean; our spring break was right after admissions decisions were due, so all I could think about was, would I get in, and I never had excitement for spring break like most kids; anxiety is a killer.

It is a bit better than getting rejected, though.. I guess sometimes ignorance is bliss!

Something like that happened here not too long ago.  I prefer having to wait for the admission/rejection letter, than to get it fast and get it wrong.

I'm applying to grad school next semester, and it's the whole admission/rejection-letter emotional rollercoaster all over again T_T  .
