WVU ranks in the top 25 nationally for producing Goldwater winners.
We have had 16 Carnegie Foundation West Virginia Professors of the Year.
WVU has produced 25 Rhodes Scholars, 30 Goldwater Scholars, and 18 Truman Scholars.
Adventure West Virginia is a summer wilderness orientation program that allows new students to bond while enjoying the natural beauty of the state.
WVU residence hall host residential colleges. Special programs and activities bring additional faculty and working professionals into the residence halls to share their knowledge. The goal is to create a lifelong love of learning and to integrate what happens in the classroom into real life.
WVU has the only undergraduate degree program in biometric systems in the nation.

The WVU Coliseum is one of the loudest venues for college basketball.

The record number of riders on WVU’s electric-powered, computer-operated people-mover, the Personal Rapid Transit, was set on the first day of classes in fall of 2006: 31,280 riders in one day
One of WVU’s oldest and most historic buildings, Woodburn Hall, contains graffiti on the walls in the clock tower. The scribbles scroll back and forth from the 1800s to the 21st century, including “Huff” and “Wyant,” football greats from the glory years of the 1950s, and “Disco Danny,” who was “stayin’ alive” in the 1970s (and out of class, most likely).

Since 1890 West Virginia University’s official school colors have been gold & blue.
The Mountaineer mascot 1st appeared informally at WVU sporting events around 1927. The 1st formally selected Mountaineer was in 1934. The costume is tailored to fit each winner, & male Mountaineers customarily grow beards to go along with the coonskin cap & rifle.
“Country Roads” has been performed at every home football pregame show since 1972. In 1980 John Denver sang his hit song during pregame festivities to a sold-out crowd. His performance marked the dedication of Mountaineer Field. It’s now a tradition for fans at Milan Puskar Stadium, home of Mountaineer Field, to join the team in singing “Country Roads” after every home victory.
A rousing cheer at WVU athletic events, the “Let’s Go Mountaineers” tradition allows fans to square off in a cheering challenge, led by the cheerleaders & mascot one side of the audience chants “Let’s Go” while the other side responds “Mountaineers.”
