What Makes Us Unique

Soka University is a private, non-profit liberal arts college founded upon the Buddhist principles of peace, human rights and the dignity of life. The mission of Soka University of America is to foster a steady stream of global citizens committed to living a contributive life... people who want to give back to their communities and countries and be leaders for peace.

SUA is located halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego in Southern California just 1 mile from the Pacific Ocean. The curriculum is non-sectarian, and SUA is open to top students of all nationalities and beliefs. About half of SUA’s students come from the United States, and half come from 32 other countries. 80% of SUA students receive some form of financial aid. If you are interested in learning about other languages and cultures, SUA is a wonderful, diverse place to be! SUA has a 9:1 student faculty ratio (average class size: 16), so students at Soka University really appreciate the ability to get to know their professors on a personal level.

All students study a non-native language (Chinese, Japanese, or Spanish), and everyone spends a semester abroad in their junior year in a country where that language is spoken. (Study Abroad costs are built into the tuition.) All students receive a lap top computer as part of their tuition. SUA offers a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts with concentrations in Humanities, International Studies, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. All students live on campus in beautiful Residence Halls where there is a private bath for every two students. SUA is a small college where students are mentored and challenged to learn the skills to “create value” wherever they may go. (Soka means “to create value.”)

Fun Facts
