Barnard's campus includes an underground hallway system that connects all buildings. On a cold winter day, students can go from their residence halls to their classrooms to the dining halls to the library to their faculty advisor's office hours, even to the Java City Cafe for a warm latte, using the convenient "tunnels."

Every May and December on the eve of the first final exam, President Judith Shapiro leads faculty, administrators, staff, even the Barnard Board of Trustees, in serving students the much-anticipated Midnight Breakfast. The menu includes immense amounts of scrambled eggs, French toast, pancakes, potatoes, waffles, and muffins, not to mention coffee. Students enjoy the study break and, of course, the sight of their professors in chef's hats, aprons, and gloves dishing out breakfast to 1500 undergraduates. Midnight Breakfast is a cherished tradition at Barnard that nourishes school spirit and campus community. Today, its fans include the many Columbia students who stream across Broadway to join their Barnard friends in a carb-loaded break from the books.
