According to Oliver Smithies, 2007 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine and keynote speaker at last Friday's Via Research Recognition Day, sponsored by Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, the answers are work, hobby and family. The focus of his most recent visit to Blacksburg, however, was his work.

3. Filling in for Biden, Bayh speaks in Roanoke

Those who gathered in Roanoke Sunday to hear and possibly meet Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden did not get the chance. Biden canceled all weekend campaign events because of his mother-in-law's severe illness.

4. Class of '58 enters Old Guard

This Homecoming weekend at Virginia Tech, the class of 1958 was welcomed back to Blacksburg to its 50th "golden anniversary." The class of 1958 highlighted its momentous induction to the "Old Guard" with a $1.2 million gift to the Corps of Cadets' endowment.

5. Christiansburg residents, Hokie swimmers to split new facility

A new aquatic facility in Christiansburg will open its doors next spring for town residents and Virginia Tech's swim and dive team.

6. Whitaker arrested again

Virginia Tech wide receiver Ike Whitaker was arrested on public intoxication charges after blowing a .33 Blood Alcohol level early Friday, Oct. 3, outside Oge Chi's dance club. Officer Sedrick Hayes, of the bicycle mounted unit, made the arrest said Sgt. Nathan O'Dell. Whitaker appeared to be in the midst of a verbal altercation when Officer Hayes intervened and noticed Whitaker had slurred speech, glassy red eyes, and appeared to be intoxicated, said O'Dell.

7. Waner/Gilmore face off in debate

Former governors and candidates for the U.S. Senate, Mark Warner and Jim Gilmore, competed in their third debate at the Taubman Museum of Art in downtown Roanoke on Friday night.

8. Hickam, Hokie of 'October Sky' fame, sits down with CT

Homer Hickam is a graduate of Virginia Tech, former NASA engineer and author of 10 books. Hickam became well known for his novel "Rocket Boys," which was made into the motion picture "October Sky," starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Hickam.
