1. UCLA hosts 'electrowetting' workshop Aug. 20–22
UCLA's California NanoSystems Institute hosts the sixth International Meeting on Electrowetting, where more than 70 engineers, government and industrial scientists, faculty members, and students will discuss recent advances in electrowetting. Electrowetting, which uses electrical charges to manipulate tiny amounts of liquids on surfaces, is currently used in a wide range of applications, from adjustable lenses to consumer electronic displays.

2. UCLA Library features photos, paintings of Los Angeles through Sept. 12
"Los Angeles at the Beginning and Today," an exhibit that juxtaposes paintings based on historical photographs with contemporary photos of the same locations or themes, will be on view at the UCLA Powell Library from Aug. 18 through Sept. 12.

3. New dean arrives at UCLA School of Nursing
Courtney Lyder, 42, (Westwood), a respected researcher in patient safety and geriatric nursing and a leading advocate for healthcare diversity, has been appointed professor and dean of the UCLA School of Nursing.

4. UCLA receives $10 million gift to find a cure for Alzheimer's
Jim Easton, a UCLA alumnus and longtime benefactor of the university, has made a $10 million donation to the Alzheimer's Disease Center at UCLA's Department of Neurology in honor of his mother, who died from the disease.

5. UCLA Library receives Mellon grant to make rare books accessible
The project will involve two concurrent efforts focused on rare books in the Charles E. Young Research Library Department of Special Collections, one of the leading collections of its kind in the country.

6. UCLA summer program strengthens writing skills for Korean students
A group of 86 Korean students are enhancing their English reading and writing skills for four weeks through the UCLA Writing Project, housed at the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.

7. Training exercise tests response to shooters on UCLA campus
Public safety officials chose a nightmarish scenario for a massive police training drill on the UCLA campus: two shooters loose in a dorm, dozens of students shot and injured, and hostages taken.

8. UCLA helps high school students to master the languages of home
High school students are learning more about their "heritage language" at a specially designed summer course at UCLA.

9. Police plan major training exercise on campus
UCLA police, the FBI, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Fire Department and other public safety agencies are planning a large-scale training exercise in the campus residence hall area on Tuesday, Aug. 5. Also participating will be emergency medical personnel from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

10. Work by Isamu Noguchi at UCLA sculpture garden damaged
A bronze sculpture by famed sculptor Isamu Noguchi that is part of UCLA's Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, was vandalized overnight, according to the UCLA Police Department. The sculpture, "Garden Elements" (1962), is at the southeast entrance to the garden.
