1. NAE welcomes two from MIT

MIT professors Robert Armstrong and Arvind are among the 65 new members of the National Academy of Engineering. This year the NAE also installed alumnus Irwin Jacobs as the new chairman of the academy.

2. MIT's energy projects on display Oct. 10

MIT Energy Night, to be held from 5:30-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, at the MIT Museum, will highlight more than 40 projects, groups and start-up businesses in and around MIT at the cutting edge of energy research.

3. MIT marks 25 years of international initiatives

The Institute celebrated 25 years of international engagement through its pioneering MISTI program at an Oct. 2 dinner. MISTI prepares MIT students to participate in the global economy by connecting them to hands-on opportunities across the globe.

4. MIT creates Environmental Research Council

MIT has announced the launch of the Environmental Research Council to elevate and expand the Institute's leadership in this critical area of study. The goal is to create a robust collaboration comparable to the MIT Energy Initiative.

5. MIT publicly launches Campaign for Students

MIT is publicly launching its Campaign for Students on Friday, Oct. 3, with a goal of raising $500 million or more for undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, curriculum innovation and student life.

6. MIT Medical launches upgraded web site

The MIT Medical Department has relaunched its web site with a new address -- medweb.mit.edu -- as well as clearer navigation, patient-specific guides and an improved clinician directory.

7. 'To fold a big bang'

MIT juniors Thaddeus Cybulski and Stela Gaitani experiment with collision in "To Fold a Big Bang," a dance workshop given by guest choreographer Neta Pulvermacher.

8. Celebrate excellence at MIT

Nominations are due Oct. 27 for this year's Excellence Awards, which recognize exceptional accomplishments by support, service, sponsored research, administrative and other academic staff. (The due date is Oct. 20 for Lincoln Lab employees.)

9. Draper Lab holding Tech Expo Oct. 7-8

MIT faculty and students are invited to visit Draper Lab's Technology Exposition on Oct. 7-8 to see Draper projects and technologies and discuss them with staff.

10. MIT hosts first UrbLab conference Oct. 3

The MIT Urbanization Laboratory is organizing a symposium on the culture and politics of urban change that will be held from 1-5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, in 7-431.
