Knowledge Areas

Knowledge Areas & Required Proficiency Explanation

Find out the importance of specific areas of knowledge for the selected profession. Do you need to be a computer whiz or a legal expert? Will some business know-how be important?

Each area of knowledge is given two scores of 0-100. The first score indicates how important knowledge in a given area is for success in the profession. The second score indicates the level of knowledge needed. The second score is accompanied by a scale that helps you interpret the score.

Knowledge Area Scores

Customer and Personal Service
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

Process customer dry-cleaning drop off	Work as a day care aide supervising 10 children	Respond to a citizen's request for assistance after a major disaster

Food Production
Knowledge of techniques and equipment for planting, growing, and harvesting food products (both plant and animal) for consumption, including storage/handling techniques.

Keep an herb box in the kitchen	Operate a commercial fishing boat	"Run a 100,000-acre farm"

English Language
Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Write a thank you note	Edit a feature article in a local newspaper	Teach a college English class

Production and Processing
Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
